 Herb 60-100 cm high, stem dull red, young part with white hair. Petioles dull red. Leaves dull red or dark green. Inflorescence pseudo-spike; bracts stiff spine half the length of the bract. Flowers unisexual, numerous, dull red. Tepals dull red. Filament dull red; anther yellow. Fruits circumsessile at middle, with persistent tepals, , dull red; seed reddish-brown.
