ไม้เถาเลื้อย มีมือเกาะ ใบเดี่ยว เรียงสลับ รูปไข่หรือเกือบกลม แผ่นใบเว้าเป็นพู ๕ – ๙ พู ดอกเดียว สีขาว ดอกบานกว้างถึง ๑๒ ซม. แยกเป็นดอกเพศผู้และดอกเพศเมีย ผลสดมีเนื้อในสีขาว มีรูปร่าง หลากหลายตามสายพันธุ์ ออกดอกช่วงเดือนสิงหาคม – ตุลาคม ขยายพันธุ์โดยการเพาะเมล็ด

Characteristics :

Lagenaria siceraria is an annual climber, with tendrils. Leaves simple, alternate, ovate or suborbicular, 5 – 9 lobed. Flowers white, in axillary, up to 12 cm in diameter. Male flowers on long pedicels and female flowers on short pedicels. Fruit is a pepo, very variable in size and shape. Flowering in August – October. It is propagated from seed.

ผลอ่อนและยอดนำมาต้มรับประทานกับนํ้าพริก หรือนำมาแกง ตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณใช้ผลแห้งเป็นภาชนะใส่นํ้าหรือของเหลวต่างๆ

Uses and Utilization :

Young fruits and shoots are eaten after boiled or cooked in curry. The dried fruit have been used to store water and other liquids since ancient times.
