ไมพุ้ม่ สูง ๑ – ๑.๕ ม. ตามกิ่งกา้ นมีขนนุม่ ใบเดี่ยว ออกเรียงสลับ รูปไข่ แผ่นใบเว้าเป็นพู ผิวใบมีขนนุ่มทั้งสองด้าน ดอกออกเป็นช่อตามซอกใบหรือปลายกิ่ง ดอกสีม่วง มีกลีบดอก ๕ กลีบ ผลรูปทรงกลมขนาด ๑ ซม. ผลอ่อนสีเขียว ผลสุกสีส้ม มีเมล็ดแบนจำนวนมาก ออกดอก ช่วงเดือนกรกฎาคม – พฤศจิกายน ขยายพันธุ์โดยการเพาะเมล็ด
Solanum anguivi is a shrub, 1 – 1.5 m tall. Branches and leaves are covered with soft hairs. Leaves are simple,alternate, ovate and lobed. Inflorescences are in terminal and axillary, with purple flowers; 5 petals. Fruits are globose, 1 cm in diameter green and turning orange when ripe. Seeds are compresses, numerous. Flowering in July – November. This plant is commonly grown from seed.
ทุกส่วนของมะแว้งมีสรรพคุณเป็นยาสมุนไพร โดยเฉพาะผลแก่นิยมนำมาผลิตเป็นยาแก้ไอ ผลดิบนำมารับประทานเป็นผักกับลาบ หรือนํ้าพริก
The whole parts are used in traditional medicine, esspecailly for the treatments of coughs. Young fruits are eaten with chilli sauces as a side dish.
