ไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลาง สูง ๕ – ๑๐ ม. ตามลำต้นและกิ่งมีหนามแหลม ใบประกอบแบบขนนก เรียงสลับ ดอกออกเป็นช่อแตกแขนงที่ปลายยอดหรือซอกใบ สีขาว ผลรูปทรงกลม มีกลิ่นหอม ผลแห้งแล้วแตก มีเมล็ดสีดำ ออกดอกช่วงเดือนพฤษภาคม – สิงหาคม ขยายพันธุ์โดยการเพาะเมล็ด
Zanthoxylum rhetsa is a medium-sized tree, 5 – 10 m tall. Stems and branches are covered with prickles. Leaves are pinnately compound, alternate. Inflorescences in terminal or axillary panicles, flowers white, light fragrant. Fruits globose, dehiscent, aromatic, with black seeds. Flowering in May – August. This plant can be grown from seeds.

Young leaves are eaten fresh as vegetables with chilli sauce. The dried fruits are used as a spice in many local foods.
