Clump-forming herb 60 cm tall. Rhizome horizontal, running but not far, root tubers present; cut rhizome pale yellow, tasting strongly phenolic and bitter, slightly anaesthetising tongue. Leaves plicate, plain green, sheaths red. Inflorescence breaking out of leaf bases, flower once a year. Bracts red-brown striped, coma bracts white with green tips. Flowers white with yellow lip. |
